All About The Summer Solstice
As we approach the Summer Solstice on June 20th, it's a wonderful time to reflect on the significance of this celestial event. And before I forget, we talked all about our current transit happening today in my last newsletter so please go back and read that if you haven't.
The Summer Solstice marks the longest day and the shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, a time when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky.
This powerful moment offers us an opportunity to celebrate, reflect, and set new intentions. Let's dive into the science, astrology, energetic impacts, and how we can honor this special time with rituals and journal prompts.
The Summer Solstice occurs when the tilt of the Earth's axis is most inclined towards the Sun, resulting in the longest period of daylight.
This marks the official start of Summer and has been celebrated by various cultures throughout history. From ancient stone circles like Stonehenge to modern festivals, the solstice has always been a time to honor the Sun and its life-giving energy.
Astrologically, the Summer Solstice coincides with the Sun entering Cancer, a water sign associated with home, family, and emotional security. Cancer's energy is nurturing, intuitive, and deeply connected to our roots and traditions. As the Sun moves into Cancer, we are invited to turn inward, reconnect with our loved ones, and create a sense of sanctuary in our lives.
This event brings a surge of solar energy, making it an ideal time to embrace the light within and around us. This heightened energy can help us to illuminate our goals. What I mean by this is that the Solstice is a powerful time to gain clarity on our intentions and set new goals.
The increased daylight symbolizes illumination and growth. It can also aid in balancing energies. With the Sun at its peak, we can balance our masculine and feminine energies, finding harmony between action and introspection.
And it can also create some serious abundance. This is a time to appreciate the abundance in our lives and express gratitude for the blessings we've received.
So, let's dive into some ritual and writing practice to commemorate the occasion, shall we?
To prepare, find a quiet space where you can connect with nature, whether it's your backyard, a park, or a favorite outdoor spot. Gather items that represent the Sun and Cancer's nurturing energy, such as sunflowers, seashells, candles, and crystals like carnelian and moonstone.
Now it's time to create a sacred space. Arrange your chosen items in a circle within the space you sit, or on an altar. Light a candle to symbolize the Sun's light. I love a white, cream, yellow or gold candle for this.
The next objective is to ground yourself. Sit comfortably and take a few deep breaths. Visualize roots growing from your body into the Earth, grounding you. I like to visualize these roots stemming from my feet or sit bones.
Next, we set some intentions. Reflect on what you want to illuminate and grow in your life. Write down your intentions on a piece of paper. This could be monetary, this could be free time, or it could simply be more self-love as to amplify love in your life as a whole, the possibilities are endless.
Now to my favorite part, the meditation. Close your eyes and meditate on the warmth and energy of the Sun. Feel its light filling you with vitality and inspiration. Feel it warming the entire body as you become more and more filled with light and the feeling of what it would be like to have what you desire. Call in blessings, emotions and even tangible gifts from the Universe with an open and honest heart.
Spend a few moments expressing gratitude for the abundance in your life. Speak your gratitude out loud or write it in a journal or on a piece of paper. Should you do this writing part of the ritual, safely burn your intention paper in the candle flame, releasing your desires to the Universe. Then if it feels right and you are open to it, celebrate with a joyful activity like dancing, singing, or spending time with loved ones. In my opinion this really seals the deal and draws on joyful abundance.
And if you'd like to really dive into more journaling beyond this, here are some journal prompts for the Summer Solstice.
