All About Venus Retrograde & More
There are weekends the sky just whispers, and then there are weekends like this one. There are three heavyweight events land back-to-back to back, and the whole system; sky, body, nervous system, has to find a way to metabolize it all at once. Saturday, October 3rd, and Sunday, October 4th, are two of those days. If you've felt the air, get thick already, you're not imagining it! Let's walk through what's actually happening, why it feels the way it feels, and (most importantly) what to do about it.
Mars, the planet of will, action, and raw assertion, is currently blazing through Leo which is a sign that doesn't do anything halfway. Leo wants to be seen, wants to matter, wants to lead with the heart wide open. Across the sky, at 3 degrees, sits Pluto, retrograde in Aquarius. Pluto is the planet of power and the kind that operates underground, in the unconscious, in the places we don't examine until we're forced to. Aquarius is collective, detached, a little cool by temperament. When these two square off in direct opposition, you get a very specific kind of tension: personal will (Mars/Leo) staring down structural, impersonal power (Pluto/Aquarius).
Practically, here's what that can feel like in a body and a life: a flash of something that isn't quite anger, but is adjacent to it as a fierce, but clarifying "no." If someone tries to push you around, talk over you, or test your boundaries this weekend, you may find you have far more steel in your spine than you expected. This is real. Mars-Pluto contacts are famous in astrology for generating intense inner power like a kind of reserve tank of will you didn't know you had access to. You can absolutely stand up for yourself under this sky, and you may do it more effectively than usual, because Pluto doesn't do surface level; it goes straight to the root of what actually needs to be said.
The caution, and it's a real one: oppositions are not solo transits. They're relational by nature and something outside you is pulling against something inside you, and the temptation is to over-correct. Mars in Leo can want to “win” in order to prove a point, and to be the one who's right. Pluto retrograde adds an undertow of old material like power dynamics from years ago, control issues, moments you felt small, but that can get stirred up and projected onto whatever's in front of you today. So, the invitation isn't to suppress the intensity. It's to use it rather than be used by it. Ask yourself, before you respond to whatever provokes you: is this about right now, or is this about every time I've felt powerless before? Standing up for yourself is warranted but going to war with a ghost of the past is not.
As if the Mars-Pluto opposition weren't enough, as we discussed in the prior newsletter, Venus turns retrograde this same day. Venus governs love, money, values, self-worth, and what (and who) we consider beautiful or worth our time. When Venus stations, meaning it pauses and appears to reverse direction from Earth's vantage point, it's not a subtle astrological event. Stations are when a planet's energy is most concentrated, most palpable, because it's moving so slowly through the sky that its themes get emphasized rather than diffused.
Venus Retrograde periods are classically times for review, but not initiation. Old flames reappear and financial decisions deserve a second look. Your sense of your own worth may wobble and then need re-anchoring, and not from outside validation, but from something steadier inside you. Landing on the exact same day as a Mars-Pluto opposition is significant: you have the planet of desire and value going internal and retrospective, at the very same moment the planet of will is locked in a power struggle with the planet of the underworld. That is a lot of psychological weather for one 24-hour period. It's genuinely one of the more loaded days of the season.
The very next day, the Sun which is currently in Libra, the sign of relationship, balance, and fairness, moves into exact opposition with Saturn, Retrograde at 11 degrees. Saturn is the planet of boundaries, responsibility, limitation, and consequence. So, it doesn't rush, and it doesn't let you skip steps. When the Sun, our core vitality and sense of self, opposes Saturn, the classic experience is heaviness. It’s like a sense that your energy is being asked to meet resistance, that responsibilities you're carrying suddenly feel like they have more mass than usual.
The Sun wants to shine, to move, to feel vital and unrestricted. Saturn says: not yet, not without some sort of structure, and definitely not without proof. This can manifest as fatigue that seems to come from nowhere, a low mood that isn't really "about" anything specific, or a sense that dark clouds are hovering just overhead even though nothing has technically gone wrong. If you find yourself doubting a plan, feeling unseen, or bracing for disappointment on Sunday, that's the transit talking as much as it's "you."
Here is the single most important piece of guidance for this day: this is not the day to make a new commitment. Read that again. Saturn Retrograde asks you to look backward before you build forward, and to finish, revise, or release what's already in motion rather than adding new weight to the pile. If a contract, a promise, or a big yes is on the table this weekend, it can almost certainly wait a few days. Saturn will still be there, but the clouds, importantly, will not.
Landing Mars-Pluto, Venus Retrograde, and Sun-Saturn within about 24 hours of each other creates what I'd call a compression weekend. There’s a lot of psychological and energetic material surfacing at once, with limited runway to process it in real time. From a psychological standpoint, this kind of clustering often produces symptoms before it produces insight, like irritability, low energy, a sense of being emotionally "full" even when nothing dramatic has happened. That's not a malfunction though, and in my option, it is the correct response to genuine astro-energetic load. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it's supposed to do when asked to hold this much at once.
So here is the prescription, plainly: rest!!! And not passive collapse-on-the-couch rest necessarily (though that's allowed), but deliberate, protective rest. Lower the number of decisions you're making this weekend. Say less than you might normally say in conflict and not because your feelings aren't valid, but because Mars-Pluto material benefits from a beat of reflection before it's spoken. Postpone the new commitment. Let Sunday's heaviness be weather, not verdict. Know (and this is astrologically and psychologically true — that this is time-limited. The Sun moves off this Saturn opposition within days. The storm clouds are real, and they are passing. You will feel more optimistic soon; the data (both astrological and simply how transits work) supports that directly.
If you do feel the urge to assert yourself this weekend, from a psychological lens, the healthiest expression of Mars-Pluto energy is usually the *unspoken* kind first: journaling the confrontation before having it, naming the old wound that's been triggered before reacting to the new one, letting the intensity move through your body, like a walk, a hard workout, even just clenching and releasing your fists, before it moves through your words. Power used well is power that's been metabolized. So, give yourself permission this weekend to do less, decide less, and promise less than usual, and to trust that your inner power, and your optimism, are both fully intact underneath the clouds.
10 Journal Prompts for Self-Care This Weekend:
1. Where in my life do I feel like I need to prove something right now, and to whom?
2. What old memory of feeling powerless is this weekend's tension actually connected to?
3. What is one boundary I've been afraid to state plainly, and what's the smallest version of stating it?
4. What commitment am I tempted to make right now that could genuinely wait until next week?
5. Where does my sense of self-worth currently depend on someone else's approval?
6. What would "resting on purpose" look like for me this weekend, specifically?
7. What responsibility am I carrying that feels heavier than it should, and why?
8. If the heaviness, I'm feeling is temporary weather and not truth, what would I do differently today?
9. What does my body need right now that I've been postponing giving it?
10. What would it look like to be powerful and gentle with myself at the same time?
Mantras:
My power doesn't need to prove itself to be real.
I can rest today and still be responsible tomorrow.
This heaviness is just like weather, and it will pass.
